Create meaningful, need-based facets and filter labels

There are few (if any) transactional websites that don’t offer faceted search or filters. When used correctly, these tools are straightforward and easy-to-use. They minimize cognitive friction and allow users to quickly narrow down options to those that match their specific needs.

The Baymard Institute revealed in a 2015 benchmark study that only 16% of major e-commerce websites offer a reasonably good filtering experience.

The vast majority of these sites offer an unfortunate combination of inadequate filtering options and poor interfaces that are confusing and difficult to use. This not only impacts customer satisfaction, it negatively affects your conversion. 65% of test subjects who were asked to use a filter to find a suitable product had to give up, or worse, ended up purchasing a product that didn't match their needs.

It's obvious that filters as we know them are in dire need of fixing.

The key is to make filters more intuitive. Just because filters have been implemented in a certain way in the past doesn't mean that it’s the right way.

Filters must intuitively speak to customers to allow for a more inspiring product discovery experience. Unfortunately, most filters use labels that are updated infrequently and are based on the way that products are stored in a merchant's database; they do not necessarily reflect how users actually think and feel about products.

They are often only useful to experts in a particular domain who already know which filters must be applied in order to locate the desired products or services.
